HTC One mini: Hands-on Review
HTC has announced an affordable version of its flagship device, the HTC One mini, but many industry commentators believe that the manufacturer could have positioned the device as a secondary premium model, thanks to its impressive specs.
Sharif Sakr, writer for business and finance publication Forbes, believes that HTC failed to spot the niche with the One mini, leaving the 4-inch smartphone market wide open for other manufacturers and their mass of high-end mobile phone deals to take precedence.
He said: “Just like Samsung with the Galaxy S4 Mini (and Galaxy S3 Mini before that), it made the utterly counter-intuitive assumption that people who want a small smartphone also want a lower-cost smartphone, despite the fact that over 12 million people every month lavish vast sums on 4-inch [high-end] phones.”
The HTC One mini offers fantastic build quality, much like that of its premium sibling, with the same aluminium chassis being carried forward to give a stylish feel to the mid-range handset. The only downside is the plastic bezel around the edge, which detracts slightly from the overall high-end design.
In terms of specs the smartphone houses a 4.3-inch HD display, 1.4GHz dual-core processor, and the same UltraPixel camera as the HTC One. It also boasts 1080p full HD video recording, 16GB internal storage and runs Android Jelly Bean with HTC’s Sense 5.0 user interface skinned on top.
Features such as BlinkFeed and the HTC Zoe camera functionality have also been transferred from its flagship counterpart, as have the BoomSound speakers, making for a mid-range device that could easily contend with some of the high-end phones currently available.
